Electric Furnace Conversions

In recent years, we’ve been helping the residents and business owners of St. John’s switch from old oil furnaces to the more eco-friendly electric furnaces. We’ll visit your home, carefully disconnect the old furnace and switch it over to an electric one. By going from 80% efficiency to 100% efficiency, you can save money and reduce your carbon footprint!

Here is how to get started...

To start the process of converting your furnace from oil to electric you will need to have an electrician verify that you are able to supply 100 amps and 240 volts for a 20 KW furnace and 125 amps and 240 volts for a 24 KW furnace. There must be a neutral wire included. If you need a hot water boiler the electrician will need to provide a wire for this as well.

If you are trying to get the Govt rebate program the electrician must take out a permit for the installation.

If you wish to discus in more detail the conversion of your hot water oil furnace to an electric furnace, please call me after 6:30 pm.  Each house is different, and I try to consult each customer.

I will list some of the comparisons for you to consider.

  • An average oil furnace works approximately 80% meaning for every $1.00 of oil .20 cents goes up the chimney.  An electric furnace operates at 100% with no heat loss.

  • An average oil furnace operates at 160 to 180 degrees Fahrenheit; 24 hours a day, 7 days a week all year long. There is a constant source of heat and burning of oil. An electric furnace sits idle with no consumption of electricity until there is a call for heat by your thermostat. So for the warmer months in the summer there is no electricity required.

  • An oil furnace requires a technician to clean and service the furnace once a year. An electrical  furnace may need service every 5 years depending on the usage.

  • An oil furnace system usually requires a yearly warranty program for the possibility of the furnace needing repairs. There is no warranty program required for an electric furnace.

  • You house insurance cost will be lower due to longer having oil on your property.

  • You will not face the cost of every having to replace an oil tank.

If you have a hot air furnace, I do not install electric hot air furnaces.  You are better to convert to a heat Pump.  I can remove the oil tank for this procedure.

When you call me please state you have read this information as plan 1.

Not all furnaces are the same. Slant/fin furnaces have a cast iron body and use less electricity than other furnaces on the market.
